Bellingham, WA – The Blue Room, a Bellingham venue known for its diverse event roster, is under fire after abruptly canceling an art and music event organized by Eternvl Records, just three days before it was set to take place on August 14. The event was to feature a lineup of artists predominantly from Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities.
Reason for Cancellation
The Blue Room cited “financial reasons” for the cancellation, despite continuing with other scheduled events. The venue also stated that they “Regularly cancel events and suggested that this particular cancellation should not significantly impact Eternvl Records”. The Blue Room attributed the cancellation to financial instability, issues with a new 50/50 partner, and the perceived financial risks associated with hip-hop events.
Eternvl Records’ Response
Eternvl Records, a collective committed to their ongoing efforts to empower entrepreneurs of color through their business and artist development workshops. They also highlight supporting BIPOC artists and communities. Eternvl Records offered to cover expenses for the entire staff and help with additional staffing and Blue Room still denied regardless of compensation. Despite these offers, The Blue Room proceeded with the cancellation, forcing Eternvl Records to quickly find an alternative venue.
Accusations of Discrimination
The unexpected cancellation and lack of transparency have led Eternvl Records to accuse The Blue Room of potential discrimination. They believe the decision may have been influenced by their cultural identity, which they feel has adversely affected their business and reputation. Eternvl Records argues that their contributions to the community, including behind-the-scenes support for BIPOC entrepreneurs, deserve better treatment.
Current Status
Eternvl Records has secured a new venue for the event, but the incident has ignited a debate about The Blue Room’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Critics question whether the venue’s actions align with its public image and whether it truly supports all artists and communities.
